How We Made Our LOTR Hobbit Costumes! | DIY Tutorial?

Happy Wednesday! I hope you all are having a spectacular day <3 So in last week's blog post How I Spent SPOOKY Season! - Halloween 2022 I said I would do a tutorial, a how to, if you will. On how we made our Merry and Pippin costumes! So if you and one of your friends (or sibling) want to dress up as the best LOTR duo, than this is the blog post for you ;) *crafty video transition* Let's get started!

Here's the Google Doc I made for our Inspo: Halloween | Merry and Pippin Costume Stuff!

So first is all the stuff we bought, online! We got these off of Amazon for around 7 dollars Link Because the ones from Etsy (in the document) were sold out

Than our Mom found this pattern on Amazon (yet again) Link So you see that little brown on at the bottom? That's the pattern we used for our costumes! The pattern was pretty inexpensive, maybe around ten dollars?

Next, our Mom also suggested we get fake feet! Which I think really made our costumes look realistic! Thanks Mom <3 So we got two sets of those, can you guess from where? Amazon! Whose surprised? Link You guys HAVE to read the description on these 🤣 It's so funny! Me and my family were laughing our booties off reading it. Clearly it's written by a non English speaker, but still it makes literally no sense at all. Trust me! If you're having a bad day, this will make you laugh so hard, you'll pee your pants.

The last thing we ordered was some fabric for the hooded cloaks! I believe my Mom ordered it off of Joann's website? She ordered about a yard or two for each cloak so it totaled anywhere from two yards to four yards :)

After ordering everything we could online, we headed to a Goodwill and picked up a few things! So we grabbed two white (well one of them's more cream but *shrug* Who's going to tell the difference anyway) button up shirts. Easy peasy!

Next we needed two brown (in a similar shade) pants. Which we later cut to be the proper length. Also if you're making these for yourself, don't bother hemming them, because it will look more realistic, for the characters if it's a bit raggedy. Don't you think?

Now hear me out! I know you're probably thinking, "Hailey, why'd you waste your money buying two T-shirts?" I'll get to it in a minute! You'll understand, just you wait!

Than we bought two pairs (obviously) of white canvas shoes from Hobby Lobby, and they were only, like five dollars! Steal!

We also got (from Hobby Lobby) some glue,

 fake fur,

and some buttons!

Alright, now that we've gone through all our materials it's time to sew!!! My sister didn't want to help with any of the sewing, so it was just me and my Mom <3 We started by cutting out the fabric and pining our pattern pieces!

Here are some more pictures of that :)

Credit to my Mom for doing most of the sewing for our costumes <3 I did a few of the long straight seams, but I'm not very comfortable with a sewing machine so I didn't do a whole lot. I manly pressed the seams and cut the fabric out.

We just followed the instructions from the pattern, as best we could!

And did it all twice!

Here's a picture I took of the four front (back?) pieces!

My Mom took a picture of me wearing the cloak <3 We hadn't put the hood on yet though! It's almost time for the reveal!

Here's the back!

And here's the finished product! I know I look ridiculous in this picture, but just ignore that! The cloaks turned out so awesome <3

Here's what the outfits look like without the cloaks!
So our Mom took the T-shirts, cut the sleeves off; cut some length off the bottom, because the shirts were a bit long, and used this fabric tape to make it look like you could take it off by undoing the buttons (which she just sewed on) but really we just slipped it over our heads. Hopefully that makes sense 😅

To finish up our costumes, we (Me, Tony, and our Mom) stuffed the toes with paper towels and tissue paper. Than we cut the bottom off the fake, rubber feet, and glued them onto our canvas shoes! First we tried the Elmer's glue (that you saw towards the beginning of the post) but it didn't stick to the rubber very well, so it kept sliding off the shoe. After that fail, we tried using hot glue, but that ALSO didn't work! So we gave in, and went to the store to buy super glue, and that worked!

Than we painted our shoes with some new paint we found at Goodwill! We were going to use some of that faux fur on our fake feet to look like hair, but we didn't have enough time to let it dry before going Trick or Treating, and it wasn't looking like how we wanted it to, so yeah 🤷

And here is the final costumes! I really love how they turned out <3 Definitely one of our best Halloween costumes ever!

Sorry the quality of the photo isn't the best :( I just zoomed into our group photo, which you can see right, here I think the feet really tied this whole look together :) I really love these costumes <3 But I would like to know what you think of them?

I hope you guys enjoyed this blog post! Hopefully if you guys were wanting to make your own Hobbit costume, this helped! You will be sure to get lots of compliments at your next Halloween party! Have an amazing rest of your day <3
